Today I am sharing five helpful tips for staying healthy during the holidays.

The holiday season is upon us. From November 1st on, I feel like I'm in full-on holiday mode. As busy moms, how can we stay healthy during the holidays and not let our health goals go off the rails?

The holiday season is a magical time, but for moms (and dads!), it can also be incredibly hectic. Between shopping, decorating, cooking, and managing the family’s schedule, it’s easy to put your own health on the back burner. However, staying healthy during this busy time is crucial—not just for you, but for your family as well.

Here are five tips to help you stay energized, stress-free, and healthy during the holiday hustle.

Tips for Staying Healthy During the Holidays

With a plan in place, you'll enjoy the holidays without that post-holiday guilt.

Tip #1: Prioritize sleep.

With so much to do, sleep might seem like the easiest thing to cut back on. However, it’s one of the most important factors for maintaining good health. Lack of sleep can lead to stress, weakened immunity, and even weight gain. Aim for 7-8 hours of quality sleep each night. If late-night gift wrapping or early morning errands are a must, try to sneak in a short time to rest during the day.

Tip #2: Plan ahead with healthy meals and snacks.

During the holidays, it’s tempting to indulge in all the delicious treats, but too much sugar or rich foods can leave you feeling sluggish. Balance indulgences with healthy meals and snacks. Prepare quick and nutritious options like yogurt with berries, nuts, or a smoothie to keep your energy stable.

Healthy Hack: If the treats at a holiday party are a challenge for you, eat a healthy meal (with fat, fiber and protein) before you go. Then when you get there enjoy some sweet treats without overindulging.

Tip #3: Incorporate movement into your day.

Exercise might be the last thing on your mind when your to-do list is a mile long, but even a little bit of movement can boost your mood and energy. You don’t need to spend hours at the gym—a brisk walk, a 10-minute yoga session, or dancing to holiday music can make a big difference.

Tip #4 Say no to things you don't want to do and ask for help if you can.

This seems simple but it is actually really hard for many of us. There are so many things we feel we must do to keep up, or make our kids happy - and it can take a toll. It's okay to say no, to simplify.

It's also okay to ask for help. Maybe you can outsource a few things or ask family or friends to help out if you find that your to-do list is getting in the way of your healthy habits. Maybe it's asking for help with your kids so you can meal prep for a particularly busy day. Get your older kids involved and have them do some of the decorating or wrapping for you. Buy the cookies to bring to your neighbors. Every little bit helps.

Tip #5 Try not to stress about it.

The holiday season is supposed to be a time for spending time with loved ones, giving to others, reflecting on all we are grateful for, and joy. Don't let anything steal that from you. If you don't exercise for a week or two, or you over-indulge in delicious food and drinks at a gathering - just fully enjoy it and move on the next day. No guilt attached.

Start implementing healthy habits now.

If you want to feel your best during the holidays, you shouldn't wait to put healthy habits in place. Whether you are trying to cut back on sugar, or increase your protein or veggie intake, it's not easy with a tray of holiday cookies around every corner. You need to have the health habits that are a priority to you in place long before that holiday party or that late night online shopping spree.

As a mom, it’s natural to want to make the holidays perfect for everyone, but don’t forget to take care of yourself in the process. By prioritizing your health with these simple tips, you’ll not only feel better but also enjoy the holiday season to the fullest.
