How To Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag
Today I am sharing how to spring clean your makeup bag. I don't know about you, but this time of year I get the itch to clean out ALL the things - closets, toys, even the dreaded garage. It's the perfect time of year to clean out, organize, restock and refresh. And your makeup bag is no exception. Read on to find out how to give your makeup bag a good spring cleaning and then check out some of my favorite products to try this spring.
Let's start with a clean out to see what you have, what you love, what needs to go, and what you'd like to buy.

How To Spring Clean Your Makeup Bag
Step 1: Take out all of the products in your makeup bag (include any other makeup items you might have). Toss products that you don’t use or that have expired. If there is not an expiration date on the product, there may be a symbol on the back that tells how long you can keep the item once it is opened. Bacteria can build up in makeup products, so you definitely want to toss old and expired products. Put your 'keep' products aside.
Step 2: Clean your makeup bag if needed. I know mine tends to get dirty over time. You may be able to toss it in the laundry, or just spot clean.
Step 3: Discard old or dirty makeup sponges and clean your brushes. You can do this by simply filling a bowl with warm water and adding a drop or two of mild dish soap. Swirl them around a bit in the soapy water, rinse under running water until the water runs clear, and lay flat to dry.
I've also seen these silicone makeup brush cleaning pads and I'm intrigued. They are inexpensive and seem like they'd help give a more thorough clean.
Step 4: Make a list of what you need. These could be items you need to re-stock or new items you’d like to try. Purchase what you need and that's about it - a clean and organized makeup bag ready to go.
Now, check out some of my current favorites below to refresh your makeup bag this spring. Most can be found at your local drugstore, Target or on Amazon.
Refresh Your Makeup Bag with These Spring Beauty Favorites
My makeup bag is pretty streamlined and simple. I don't wear a lot of makeup, just enough to even out my skin tone and add some color. I try to use 'clean' products most of the time, but I follow more of an 80/20 mentality in regards to this. I want products that are effective and make me feel good. Some of these items I have repurchased many times, and some are new to me!
Tinted Hydrator. This little tinted hydrator has been a recent favorite of mine. It’s about $6 and can be found at your drugstore. It’s lightweight but has surprisingly good coverage. I’ve repurchased at least three or four times!
e.l.f. Cosmetics Halo Glow Liquid Filter. Next up is this multi-use product meant to give you that coveted glow. You can use it under makeup, over makeup, or mixed with your foundation. I like to use it as a highlighter on my cheekbones. It's subtle and pretty. Only $14. I love e.l.f. cosmetics and skincare - great products at great price points.
Ilia Multi-Stick Cream Blush + Highlighter + Lip Tint. This is another mutli-use product that I have and love. Ilia is a clean brand that makes great products with the prettiest colors. For a less expensive version, my go-to e.l.f. makes this Monochromatic Multi-Stick for only $5. I have not tried it, but it seems to be similar.
e.l.f. Cosmetics Glow Reviver Lip Oil. This one has been all over the internets lately so I gave it a try. It's been touted as a dupe of some of the pricier lip oils out there. I don't wear a lot of lip color but I was intrigued and picked one up for spring. It's subtle, pretty, and feels great on your lips.
Cover Girl Lash Blast Clean Volume Mascara. I have used Cover Girl mascara for years and years. I've tried others, but I always go back! Mascara is a product that I don't like to spend a lot of money on. If I can find one that is clean, works well, and is budget-friendly that is a win all around! I also like that this one comes off easily with cleanser and water, no separate eye makeup remover needed.
kur Conceal & Go Duo. Technically not makeup, but this nail illuminating duo is a new favorite. It gives your nails the prettiest touch of color and really lasts. This set has the nail illuminator (I love the white!) and the gel topcoat. Don't sleep on this one, you'll love it.
Don't Forget the SPF!
No spring makeup bag is complete without a great SPF to keep your skin protected.
Supergoop Glowscreen SPF 40. Sunscreen is a must every day, but especially during warm months when we are outside more often. This is one of my all-time favorites that I have repurchased again and again. I included it here because I keep it in my makeup bag and use it as a primer before my foundation. It's pricey but a definite winner in my book.
I hope you'll check out some of these products as you restock for spring.
