5 Fall Wellness Tips
Revisit your morning routine.
In my house, the transition from summer morning routine to fall morning routine is always a bit tricky. Even when I'm well-planned, it's not always easy getting everyone up, fed, organized, and out the door. Often my personal morning routine goes out the window during the first few weeks of the school year. And then once things settle, I can take a closer look and reset.
Your mornings set the tone for the entire day. Here are two action steps for revisiting your morning routine:
- Wake up 15-30 minutes earlier for a quiet moment before the rest of the house is up.
- Use that time for a cup of tea or coffee in peace, a walk or workout, or writing down your top three priorities for the day.
Prioritize nourishing fall foods.
Fall brings seasonal produce that’s naturally comforting and nutrient-rich. Think apples, pears, squash, pumpkin, and sweet potatoes.
Try incorporating some of these foods into your meals and snacks. It's an easy well to fuel your body while enjoying the best the season has to offer. Try:
- Plan one extra veggie per meal this week.
- Use your Instant Pot or slow cooker for hearty soups and stews that double as next-day lunches or to put in the freezer for a busy weeknight.
Refresh your movement routine.
If school activities and shorter days throw off your usual exercise habits (it always does for me), flexibility is key. Movement doesn’t have to be an hour-long workout - short bursts count, too.
To change up your exercise routine, try:
- Schedule a movement break into your calendar like any other appointment.
- Mix it up: try a cozy indoor yoga flow, a quick YouTube strength workout, or a brisk walk while the kids are at practice.
Create a cozy sleep routine.
As soon as it starts getting darker earlier, I immediately want to go into hibernation mode in the evenings. As daylight hours decrease, our body’s natural sleep rhythms shift. Prioritizing sleep now can boost your immunity and energy through the colder months.
To create a cozy routine that promotes sleep, try:
- Dim lights an hour before bed and avoid screens to help your body wind down.
- Keep your bedroom cool and add seasonal touches—like a warm throw.
- Read a good book before bed to help you relax and nod off.
Boost your immune system.
With the return of school germs and cooler weather, it’s the perfect time to give your immune system some extra love. To help boost your immunity throughout the cold weather months, try:
- Stay consistent with a balanced diet, daily movement, and hydration.
- Prioritize sleep.
- Think about supplements that may be able to strengthen your immune system.
