How To Simplify Meal Planning

How To Simplify Meal Planning. Woman writing in blank notebook.

Today I am sharing how to simplify meal planning.

Let’s be honest—between school schedules, work schedules, sports practices, and errands, dinner often feels like just one more thing on an already overflowing to-do list. Who wants to come home after a long day and figure out what to make for dinner? Not me!

That's where meal planning comes in. For me, meal planning is a super important part of my preparation for a new week. Planning meals and snacks, and prepping food in advance, saves me time and energy, and helps to lighten the mental load on busy weeknights.

Whether you’re brand new to the concept or just need a reset, here’s a practical guide on how to start meal planning and actually stick with it—especially during busy seasons like back-to-school, holidays, or sports season.

8 Tips for Simplifying Meal Planning

These are the tips you need to help streamline meals for you and your family.

Look at the week ahead.

The first step in meal planning is to take out your calendar and look at the week ahead. Are there nights when you won't have time to cook and you'll need to depend on meal prep or leftovers? Nights when the whole family will be home? Will some meals need to be easily reheated if you are not all eating at the same time? Are you planning to eat out or order takeout?

Start small.

If you’re wondering how to start meal planning without feeling overwhelmed, the answer is: start small. Choose just 3 dinners for the week instead of trying to plan every single meal and snack. This gives you flexibility while still giving structure to your week.

Don't reinvent the wheel.

Pick meals you know your family loves, and rotate them. I like to keep a list of go-to meals and pantry meals in a note on my phone. When I'm really feeling like I don't have the mental energy to plan meals, I'll pull out the list. 4-5 meals is a perfect place to start.

Plan once, shop once.

Create your meal plan at the start of the week, make your grocery list, and try to shop one time to get everything you need. That can help to save you mental energy throughout the week.

Cook once, eat twice.

One of the best easy meal planning hacks is to double up and repurpose leftovers. Whether it's making a big batch of something and eating it more than once, or prepping double batches of staples like roast chicken or taco meat, that can be used in a variety of recipes.

Prep ingredients, not just meals.

Along the same lines, meal planning and prep does not mean that you need to make all of your meals in advance. I like to prepare staple foods that I can rely on during the week. This might include washing and cutting veggies, washing fruit, preparing a batch of rice, or making shredded chicken (or buying a rotisserie chicken for an easy protein).

Make it a family affair.

Get your kids involved by asking them what they'd like to eat during the upcoming week. When they have some say, they are more likely to eat the meals you make, and maybe you can even enlist their help if they are old enough.

Use tools to make life easier.

Whether it’s an Instant Pot, slow cooker, meal planning app, or a printable planner on your fridge, don’t be afraid to use tools that take the load off.

You could even try an AI tool like ChatGPT. You can literally ask your AI assistant to make you a meal plan for the week! You specify how many meals, dietary restrictions, ingredients, kid preferences, etc. and ChatGPT can do the work for you. It's an amazing tool!

Final Thoughts

Meal planning doesn’t have to be perfect. Some weeks you’ll be on top of it, and others you’ll pivot to frozen pizza—and that’s okay. The goal is to reduce stress and bring a little more calm to your evenings.

With just a little intention and a few solid strategies, you’ll know exactly how to simplify meal planning, save time, and enjoy more family meals with less stress.
