How to Have an Organized Summer with Kids

How to Have an Organized Summer with Kids. Four kids jumping into a pool at once, with their arms up in the air.

Today I am sharing some tips for how to have an organized summer with kids.

Summer is just around the corner, and if you’re like me, you’re already dreaming of slower mornings, family adventures, and a little less hustle and bustle.

However, with kids, that relaxed summer vibe can quickly turn into exhaustion. Think mounds of laundry, constant requests for snacks, getting out the door to summer camp or sports, and summer travel - yikes.

That’s why a little summer organization now can set you up for a season that feels fun, not frantic.

Today I’m sharing some of my favorite summer tips to help you feel more prepared, keep your kids organized, and create a home that runs smoothly even when routines are a little looser.

Summer Organization Tips - Simple Steps to Start Now

1. Declutter key spaces.

Before school’s out, take a few hours to declutter high-traffic areas like the entryway, kitchen, and kids’ rooms. Focus on spaces that tend to collect clutter over the summer — think backpacks, beach gear, and summer crafts.

2. Create your summer calendar.

A big part of summer organization is simply knowing what’s happening - and when. Set up a family calendar with camps, vacations, sports practices, and special outings. Choose a format that everyone can access - whether it's a whiteboard, paper planner or shared digital calendar.

3. Set up simple daily routines.

Summer should feel easygoing, but a little structure helps keep everyone sane. Together with your kids, brainstorm a loose daily rhythm - when to do chores, when to have free time, and when screens are allowed.

Keeping some routines consistent, such as bedtime and wake up times, can also be helpful. We are certainly a little loser in the summer and on trips, but we try not to stray too far from our school year routines when it comes to sleep.

4. Plan a flexible meal strategy.

With kids home more often, the kitchen can feel like a 24/7 diner. Set yourself up for success by planning simple meals and snacks ahead of time.

Some additional tips: make a list of easy breakfast and lunch ideas and hang it on the fridge and pre-pack snacks into bins your kids can access independently.

5. Create activity zones.

Set up small areas for crafts, reading, building, or outdoor play so your kids always have a few options when boredom strikes.

You can also rotate toys, games, and books every few weeks to keep things feeling fresh without buying new stuff.

6. Have summer go-bags packed and ready to go.

Whether you're heading on a big vacation or just taking day trips to the pool or park, having bags pre-packed and ready saves so much time and stress.

I like to have go-bags packed for:

The pool - with towels, sunscreen, goggles & pool toys.

Sunscreen - a simple pouch for spray and lotion sunscreens.

First aid/meds - a simple pouch with bandaids and other simple first aid items along with meds such as pain reliever, fever reducer, allergy medicine, etc.

Snacks - we always have a pouch with snacks ready to throw into the car.

Camp gear - my kids attend day camp, and so they have a backpack with a lunch, snacks, water bottle, small fan, sunscreen, and towel with them most days.

These are my favorite pouches for snacks, sunscreen, small toys, craft supplies, and more. They are inexpensive and come in lots of colors and sizes.

7. Give yourself (and your kids) grace.

Even with the best planning, summer days will have their share of messy moments - and that’s okay.

Remember that summer organization isn't about perfection; it’s about creating just enough structure to make room for all the memory-making.

By getting a little organized now, you’re giving yourself the gift of a summer that feels fun, not overwhelming.
